Ticks & Fleas in Las Vegas

← Pest Library

Fleas and ticks usually come home on pets. Most of a flea’s life is spent off the animal, in carpet, bedding, and the yard, which is why treating the pet alone often isn’t enough.

What are you dealing with?

  • Fleas. Tiny, dark, and fast jumpers. They bite pets and people, cause itching and skin problems in pets, and can pass tapeworms to pets.
  • Brown dog ticks. The most common tick in the Valley. Unlike most ticks, they can live and breed indoors, hiding in cracks along walls, baseboards, and furniture.

Signs and sources

  • Pets scratching, biting, or licking more than usual
  • Small dark specks (“flea dirt”) in pet bedding or fur
  • Bites around ankles and lower legs
  • Ticks attached to pets after walks, parks, or trails
  • Ticks crawling up walls or along baseboards indoors

Yards with rodent or stray animal activity can keep reintroducing fleas.

What our treatment does

We treat the areas inside and outside your home where fleas and ticks live and breed, so the problem doesn’t keep coming back once your pets are protected.

What treatment can’t do

We’ll be straight with you: we don’t treat pets, so your vet’s flea and tick prevention is a must. Flea pupae are protected in a cocoon and can keep hatching for a couple of weeks after treatment, so you may still see some fleas for a short time.

What actually helps

  • Protect your pets. Ask your vet about year-round flea and tick prevention.
  • Vacuum daily. Vacuum floors and furniture every day for two weeks after treatment, and empty the vacuum outside.
  • Wash the bedding. Wash pet bedding and blankets in hot water.
  • Check after walks. Look over your pets for ticks after time at parks, trails, or washes.

Common questions

Can fleas live in my house without pets?

Yes, for a while. Fleas can hatch from their cocoons weeks after a pet has left, and they’ll bite people when there’s no animal around. Rodents or stray animals around the house can bring in new ones.

Do ticks in Las Vegas carry disease?

The brown dog tick, the most common tick in the Valley, can carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever, though cases in Southern Nevada are rare. Check pets after walks, remove ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers, and ask your vet about prevention.

How do I check my pet for fleas?

Part the fur near the base of the tail and on the belly. Look for fast-moving dark specks, or for flea dirt: black specks that turn reddish when you wipe them with a damp paper towel.

Tips and tricks

Vacuuming does more than clean. The vibration from a vacuum triggers flea pupae to hatch out of their protective cocoons, which exposes them to the treatment. That’s why daily vacuuming for the first couple of weeks makes such a difference.
